چکیده

AutoTutor is very different from previous intelligent tutoring systems. It interacts with students using free-form natural language dialog as human tutors do. It uses approximate natural language understanding techniques to compare student answers to a set of expected responses. Evaluations of AutoTutor have shown that it can be effective in increasing student learning for multiple domains. In this paper, we present RMT (Research Methods Tutor) which is a direct descendant of AutoTutor. Research methods is a richer conceptual domain than some of the others in which AutoTutor has been used. We describe the types of topics which RMT will use, the differences in pedagogical strategies which it will include, and how it will be integrated into a research methods course at DePaul University.

Research Methods Tutor: evaluation of a dialogue-based tutoring system in the classroom.

Research Methods Tutor (RMT) is a dialogue-based intelligent tutoring system for use in conjunction with undergraduate psychology research methods courses. RMT includes five topics that correspond to the curriculum of introductory research methods courses: ethics, variables, reliability, validity, and experimental design. We evaluated the effectiveness of the RMT system in the classroom using a...

Question Asking During Tutoring

Whereas it is well documented that student question asking is infrequent in classroom environments, there is little research on questioning processes during tutoring. The present study investigated the questions asked in tutoring sessions on research methods (college students) and algebra (7th graders). Student questions were approximately 240 times as frequent in tutoring settings as classroom...

Effects of Small-Group Tutoring with and without Validated Classroom Instruction on At-Risk Students' Math Problem Solving: Are Two Tiers of Prevention Better Than One?

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of small-group tutoring with and without validated classroom instruction on at-risk (AR) students' math problem solving. Stratifying within schools, 119 3(rd)-grade classes were randomly assigned to conventional or validated problem-solving instruction (Hot Math [schema-broadening instruction]). Students identified as AR (n = 243) were randoml...

Cognitive Tutors as Research Platforms: Extending an Established Tutoring System for Collaborative and Metacognitive Experimentation

Cognitive tutors have been shown to increase student learning in long-term classroom studies but would become even more effective if they provided collaborative support and metacognitive tutoring. Reconceptualizing an established tutoring system as a research platform to test different collaborative and metacognitive interventions would lead to gains in learning research. In this paper, we defi...

Measuring Student Engagement in an Intelligent Tutoring System

Detection and prevention of off-task student behavior in an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) has gained a significant amount of attention in recent years. Previous work in these areas have shown some success and improvement. However, the research has largely ignored the incorporation of the expert on student behavior in the classroom: the teacher. Our research re-evaluates the subjects of off-...
